When and why did you start playing FFXIV?
I played a bit in 2016 and started again in 2017. Mostly because it was one of the few interesting MMO playable with a controller. I also tried Tera back then.
What kind of player are you? (casual, hardcore, hardcore fat cat enthusiast maybe?)
Very casual. I’m slow at everything. Especially with leveling and catching up with story progression. I should be done with Shadowbringers by now, right? But no, I’ll just hang out with friends and take pictures of cute Au Ra.
What are your favorite jobs?
Dragoon because it’s so straightforward and DPS feels like low responsibility.
Do you enjoy crafting and gathering?
I enjoy them when I’m learning the motions, but get bored at some point when it feels repetitive. I think the crafting and gathering mechanics in this game are really well designed, but it’s hard for me to get back into it once I put it aside. It stopped being fun for me after lvl 50. Fishing was my favorite for a while, though.
What is your favorite FFXIV boss?
Can’t say that I have a favorite one, but farming Thordan for mounts with FC friends is the most fun I had against a boss.
Do you have a favorite duty? Why is it your favorite?
I really like Anemos. Everytime a video game makes me feel the presence of wind through sounds and the movement of the environments, it excites me for some reason. Sadly that motion doesn’t translate well into screenshots and Anemos is generally bad for character lighting.
Who is your favourite NPC and why?
Hien had an impression on me the first time I met him on the Hill. He’s very striking, and the Doman theme that plays when you first meet him is one of my favorite music from FFVI. I find that he’s an interesting mix of highborn and ronin.
About FFXIV Screenshots
When and why did you join the FFXIV Snaps Community?
Let’s see… since late 2018? At least according to Discord. Back then, I was mostly invested with the Eorzean Glamour Idols. And FFXIV Snaps somehow felt like an extension of that at the time, and so I just started participating. I’m glad that the Snaps community has evolved to become something unique, with its own values and culture.
When did you first feel inspired by taking screenshots?
I started in other games like Fallout 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn, with mostly landscapes and capturing the crazy things that randomly happened.
What is your favorite thing about taking screenshots?
Getting in the zone while I work, trying to find the perfect shot that hides in there, and then suddenly seeing it. Often it feels like you just stumbled onto it by chance, even though you’ve been working at it for a while. I also love it when I manage to salvage a dull-looking shot by doing some final color corrections. The social media engagement is a nice bonus, too.
What are your favorite places for screenshotting?
I love doing studio shots, which reminds me that I have to rebuild a new studio from scratch now, having recently switched to another FC. I think the La Noscean areas are my favorite exteriors, especially the Western and Outer regions. Also The Fringes has a lot if interesting corners to take pictures in.
Do you have any favorite screenshotters?
That’s such a difficult question, because I love seeing and sharing so many people’s work. My appreciation varies a lot according to their style or themes. There are so many special things going on in the screenshot comunity.
I have to mention the japanese Chiyo Asa on Twitter for her studio lighting and the lovely way she presents gear sets. There’s Luminescent (or AeQuus) on Tumblr and Twitter, who’s use of mods is transformed by their artistic work into something amazing and goes beyond just wearing pretty things. F’raneh Yamir and I share a mutual admiration for each other’s work, and I love how she includes musical themes with her pictures on Tumblr. There’s also Howl Jenkins on Twitter who is worthy of mention for his excellent faded reshade presets and portrayal of cool masculinity that doesn’t take itself too seriously. And finally, if you are willing to look away from Final Fantasy a minute, I suggest that you sample the virtual photography of Erika Tschinkel on Twitter because her work is consistently stunning.

Your most memorable screenshot (tell us the story behind it!):
My FC leader at the time demanded that I follow her into my photo studio and take pictures of her tall femroe character. It was very unexpected for me and I wasn’t sure if I was up for the sudden challenge. Doing photoshoots with other characters was still not something I was comfortable with. But because we were good friends, it went very smoothly. It was exciting and I felt very creative. I gained a lot of confidence from that experience and learned that my most creative mindset comes from spontaneity. I think it’s why I do pretty well with taking pictures at player gatherings.
