Please explain your thought process behind your winning snap:

This contest was happening around the ranking period for Ishgardian Restoration in 5.41, so I wanted a shot somewhere in the firmament. Because the song lyrics mentioned using hands to build things I wanted the focus to be on the character’s hand, holding some kind of tool. I made a blue crafting glam to try to align the colors with the firmament area, and used the lv50 CRP saw because it’s very large and attention grabbing. It took a little bit to find a spot with an interesting background that I could use for secondary focus, but I’m really happy with the boxes that I chose. I tried to light the shot such that there was some emphasis on the hand and the boxes in the background, and align the composition such that the boxes were right in the middle third vertically.

I haven’t taken a vanilla shot in a long time so it was fun trying to push the gpose tools as far as I could take them! I played with DOF and manual focus a lot to try to put focus on the right things.

I was also seeing if I could get some of the NPCs that were working in the area into the shot – there’s one behind the hand and saw and another one walks back and forth – but I decided to keep them hidden because it almost looked like someone was about to get murdered. 😛

What advice would you give someone who’s interested in getting into GPosing but might not know where to start?

The FFXIVSnaps gpose/photography guides are very good! There’s no bias here, I used them a lot when I was learning how to take better pictures and they were very useful!

There’s a lot you can learn from studying shots/presets that you like and trying to imitate them! As you keep doing that you’ll start keeping the parts you like as part of your own techniques and it’ll help you develop your own unique style! Also ask questions if you can! I’m always willing to talk about my process to people who ask and I’m sure there’s a lot of other people willing to do the same.

Finally, PS4 and vanilla screenshots are just as valid as processed ones! You can still take beautiful pictures without fancy shaders or mods or a high end PC. Gpose is a very powerful tool by itself and there’s a lot you can play around with!

Your best memory taking screenshots is?

I have taken too many screenshots to have a “best” memory, but I love any moment where I can tell a cool story with my pictures. My favorite example of this is when I got one of the bunny outfits just so I could put it on a mannequin and set up a really funny scene. The mannequin is still in my studio wearing the outfit and I have no plans to change that.

Please explain your thought process behind your winning snap:

This contest was one that had lyrics as a base, so I definitely took those lyrics into heavy consideration while thinking of what to do for my entry. Straight away I thought of Ishgard Restoration, because the lyrics referred to using your hands to make something. Once I had my location in mind (the Firmament), I thought a picture looking down the steps seemed nice, like my character was looking at all the progress that had been (and was to be) made in Ishgard. I struggled a lot with the composition though, as trying to find the right angle with the surroundings was difficult!

What advice would you give someone who’s interested in getting into GPosing but might not know where to start?

Keep it simple! If you’re like me and find the idea of editing your pictures to be daunting, instead of that, sticking to vanilla only for a while may help you. Of course, GShade can be a powerful tool to help make your pictures nicer without too much extra fuss, if you are able to use that. Take pictures of what you want to, even if that means you’re using similar poses/composition/ideas sometimes. And, don’t force it; it’s hard to make anything creative that you enjoy if it’s forced. It should be fun and something you like!

Your best memory taking screenshots is?

I remember when I was just starting the game and was just taking pictures of my character and things I liked/wanted to show off as I progressed through MSQ. I kinda am still doing that, but those first few steps I took as a newbie are really what stand out to me.

Moriana
3rd winner

Nickname: Mory
Character’s name: Moriana Fendleciel
Race: Miqo’te
Server: Ragnarok (Chaos)
Social media: @fendleciel on Twitter
Tools used for screenshots: /gpose and GShade sometimes

Please explain your thought process behind your winning snap:

About this theme, I tryed to focus on the “world” and the “hand” part. I usually take snaps of my character, on different scene, but I didn’t wanted she was the main part of this picture. The idea is to have a part of the world to rebuild, which can have a better future if people work for it. My character is gazing at a city to rebuild, raising her fist with confidence.

What advice would you give someone who’s interested in getting into GPosing but might not know where to start?

GPose mode offer a lot of options: camera position, lights, emotes, depth of field… For me, the first steps is to try the available options, step by step. Trying and praticing will make you more confortable with gpose. All this options combined together allow to have a result rather similar to real photography. The idea is to use them well to have a nice result. On a second step, you can look at some guides, either FFXIV gpose guides or directly photograpy guides. They can give you tips on the aesthetical part. But practicing is the best way to see what please you or not.

Your best memory taking screenshots is?

It’s complicated to choose! There are different memories for different reason, but one of my best memories was the Halloween party with the FFXIVSnaps in 2019. There was plenty of people there in a great decorated house. It was a great night with kind people and a lot of costumes and snaps taken.
